• "은" and "는" are topic particles (subject particles). "은" is used after the subject(noun) that ends with a final consonant (Batchim).

• The particle "는" is used after the subject(topic) that ends with a middle sound vowel(no Batchim or final consonant).

• For example, in the sentence "저는 학생입니다," "는" is used as there is no Batchim in "저(I)" while in the sentence "이것은 연필입니다," "은" is used as there is a Batchim in 이(것).
